Congratulations to Dr. Ryan Emanuel of N.C. State University for leading a new study that found vulnerable communities across the country bear the brunt of oil and gas pipelines. The findings suggest that people in those communities are at greater risk of facing water and air pollution, public health and safety issues, and other negative impacts.
You can find out more about Dr. Emanuel’s study in the June 2021 issue of North Carolina Health News, and read the original study in GeoHealth. GeoHealth is a transdisciplinary, open-access journal publishing high-quality research articles that address the intersections of the Earth sciences, environmental sciences, and health sciences.
ICCT is grateful to Dr. Emanuel for his deep commitment to environmental racial justice and to his systematic studies of related issues in our society. At an ICCT meeting in March, 2020, Dr. Emanuel, a member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, presented a comprehensive and arresting webinar on Racial Justice in the Time of Climate Change and Pandemic. You can view the video below. It’s also well-suited for a group showing at a gathering of your faith community.
