Planning For the Season of Creation

Celebrated worldwide by many Christian denominations, the Season of Creation (SOC) is a time to renew our relationship with our Creator and all creation. This year’s theme “Listen to the voice of Creation” is based on Exodus 3:1-12. Tree Planting: a Powerful Action to Slow Climate Change

For more than a decade, I had admired the massive ancient oak trees in my neighbor’s yard. When one of them came down in a storm a few years ago, I was awed by what I saw.  When the tree stood upright, I saw strength and majesty.  As the tree lay on the ground before me, I saw an intricate complexity to life that I had never before fully comprehended. It was a sacred experience.

The voices of people of color in North Carolina have been repeatedly ignored in the decision-making process that determines where to build dumps, hazardous waste sites, confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs), coal ash pits, and, more recently, the Atlantic Coast Pipeline.
