My daughters have improved as hikers, as was evidenced on my family’s recent trip to Iceland. It was our second time going to that magnificent island, and I’m happy to say that this trip did not feature the complaint, “All we’ve done is outside stuff!”
While we traveled, we talked about other parts of the world we would like to see: Belgium, Scotland, Argentina, New Zealand, Italy, Hawaii and more. This planet is full of amazing places and we want to see them all.
This world is full of beauty and wonder and grace and miracles, and that is worth protecting. I want my daughters to have a chance to experience such wonders, and their daughters, and their daughters’ daughters. I want the same for you.
And I want the countless numbers of children around this world to have a chance to breath clean air, drink clean water, eat healthy food, and grow up in a tomorrow that is better than today.
That’s why I do this work.

A brand-new Holy Day has been added to the Christian ecumenical lectionary calendar this year! September 1st is now officially the Feast Day of Creation, and Hayes Barton UMC in Raleigh is celebrating with a feast at 5:30pm and a Celebration Service at 6:30pm.

NC Climate Summit October 2: Climate Week 2026 event in Durham
This year’s North Carolina Climate Summit will take place in the Triangle. It’s an opportunity for people who care about our shifting climate to learn, connect, and collaborate.
(1) Feast Day of Creation Dinner and Service
The Hayes Barton Creation Care Team invites you to join us on September 1st for a delicious feast in our Fellowship Hall from 5:30-6:30pm. This meal will be sourced locally and prepared by Chef Netta from the Spring Forest Farm and Faith Community. At 6:30, immediately following dinner, we will move into the sanctuary for a family-friendly worship service.

(2) ICCT Advocacy Actions – Meeting Our US Representatives
Interfaith Climate Advocates Network (ICAN) in Action
Building on our successful meetings with North Carolina senators and representatives, leaders decided it was time to expand our outreach to the federal level by connecting with our U.S. Representatives. August, when members of Congress are typically in recess and back in their districts, seemed like the ideal time to do that.
We quickly learned, however, that congressional recess is anything but restful. Legislators’ district schedules are often filled with meetings, town halls, fundraisers, and community events, making it more challenging than expected to secure time with them directly. Even so, we were able to arrange meetings with members of their staff in mid to late August — an important first step.
These introductory conversations will help us better understand our Representatives’ priorities for 2027 while also giving us the opportunity to introduce ICCT and our priorities. We hope these staff meetings will lay the groundwork for future conversations with the Representatives themselves. Advocacy is all about building relationships, and that takes time, consistency, and patience.

You’re invited to an in-person postcarding event with Reclaim Our Vote on Sunday, August 30, 9:30 –10:30 am in Finlator Hall of Pullen Memorial Baptist Church, 1801 Hillsborough St. Raleigh, NC 27605 (see this map for parking options). This event is sponsored by Pullen Friends of Democracy.
Whether you have participated in postcarding before or are trying it for the first time, all are welcome to join us.
Reclaim Our Vote campaigns are nonpartisan and focus on encouraging people of color to vote in important statewide and federal races. During this event, participants will write postcards to key districts in North Carolina. All materials, including postcards, addresses, instructions, and a script, will be provided.
Now that you know about the event at Pullen, read how your congregation can hold your own event.
Postcarding with people in your congregation is a fun and effective way of providing this outreach. Go to Reclaim Our Vote to learn more and watch a tutorial orientation. Begin your organizing now so that you are ready to start writing cards in August and early September.

(4) Tour Timbermill Wind Farm with ICCT
We are thrilled and beyond excited to have an opportunity for our youth to see other forms of sustainable energy! All are welcome to join Hayes Barton United Methodist Church and their youth group, the Climate Bears, as they embark on a tour of the Timbermill Wind Farm in Chowan County on Friday, September 25th.
We are asking for your help to connect with your friends who care about Creation as much as The HBUMC Climate Bears do.
Buses depart from HBUMC at 10:30 AM sharp. Please pack a lunch to eat on the bus. This wind turbine farm is just a 2.25 hour drive from Raleigh and is located a few miles north of Edenton. Help us spread the word. We hope your youth will join us for an enjoyable Friday afternoon. Any interested middle & high school student and adult can join.
You’ll have a chance to marvel at God’s creation and see the wind at work! You’ll also learn more about the blessings that hosting a wind farm provides to a local community. Plan on returning to the church at 5:15 pm. Contact Carina Doyle with questions.

The Season of Creation is observed September 1 through October 4; this year’s theme is Living Water. As a capstone to this season, we encourage you to take part in local activities.
