What is Voter Registration Repair? Around 7,000 remain on a list of Wake County voters whose registration has been challenged as incomplete. Voters who don’t update their registration before going to the polls this year could be forced to cast a provisional ballot, triggering a review of whether their vote should count. The issue stems from a voter registration form in use for decades which did not make requirements clear. Read more about how these voters were challenged and more from NC Newsline here.
Why is it important for a person of faith to participate? In 2024 we published an article quoting Presiding Bishop Michael Curry, now retired. He said, “It is a Christian obligation to vote, and more than that, it is the church’s responsibility to help get souls to the polls.” We at ICCT believe voting and getting out the vote is a very important way for all people of faith and conscience to live out our values and influence society for the good of all peoples and all Creation. We also believe that strong Creation care policy depends on a strong democracy which in turn depends on fair and unimpeded voter access.
Want to help? Join Pullen Friends of Democracy and Wake County Indivisible at a non-partisan voter registration repair event to inform these Wake County voters whose registration has been challenged. We will address, stamp and write notes on letters to these challenged voters on how they can correct their registration. Wake County Indivisible brings the envelopes and preprinted letters. They ask each of us to bring 20 of our own first class letter stamps.
